This week Plan A Consultants has just employed our first Apprentice. We see this as an exciting opportunity to pull in new talent who we may not otherwise have had access to, and to provide both in-house and external training to the right person to grow our team of specialist Design Managers.
We have started this process at a time when the industry is reflecting on how best to attract the right people and grow talented teams. This is particularly so with the uncertainty of Brexit looming and the costs of attending university rising. Plan A is certainly in good company; the Trailblazer scheme, launched this year, offers the first architectural apprenticeships and of those practices that Consultants have signed up to-date many are our current Clients.
We have had a really positive experience with the support we have received from Camden Council – our offices are in Farringdon. As a small business we are eligible to receive funding to support the external training our candidates will receive. Furthermore, as a Camden based business, we have received support identifying the right course, engaging with the course provider, finding the right candidates and arranging interviews.
Apprenticeships are starting to be seen as a viable alternative to full time education and we certainly look forward to working with our first Design Management Apprentice this year. We also hope to expand the scheme to include an Apprentice within our Health and Safety team later next year.
