Current Plan A bedtime reading is ‘Scaling Up’ by Verne Harnish. The book is a guide for those new start-ups progressing through those treacherous second, third and fourth years – the equivalent of the difficult second album. These are the years when it’s important to reflect on the original vision of the company and scale up - tweak our way of working to reflect the change in size and expectations.
Despite all the changes over these tricky years, Harnish stresses the importance of maintaining the ‘core’ of the company. These are the fundamental principles on which each company is founded, and which should be maintained.
For Plan A over the past two and a half years, we have surrounded ourselves with experts that allow us to focus on our strengths. HR consultants, IT specialists, business mentors and external specialists have all contributed to our growth and we are very grateful for their support.
However, we like to think that we have maintained our core and we will continue to build the company around these principles. Despite opportunities to enter the world of Project Management for example, we have resisted and stuck to what we know best – Design Managers working with and for Architects and Designers. Likewise, we have responded to Client feedback and developed a Principal Designer advisor team internally. We have little appetite to add multiple services however - we know the consequences of being spread too thinly and our Clients appreciate the personal touch. We want to grow but we will not grow at any cost or for the sake of growth. Linked to this, we are proud of our independence and understand that the Architects we work with appreciate this. Whilst we add new processes and the team develops, these values will remain the important core of the company.
